   Friedman discusses "Cursed Child"0 Comments

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child producer Sonia Friedman has spoken to The London Evening Standard about the upcoming theatre show.

  Accio Quote:
That’s what Friedman will do for Harry Potter And The Cursed Child, which opens next summer. She’s sworn to secrecy about the production but I ask if the hype makes it harder. “Everyone involved is aware of the responsibility but we mustn’t be daunted. We’re all from ‘the work comes before profit’ world — so long as we stick to that, we’ll be fine.”

Pottermore has announced that Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is the eighth Harry Potter story.

It was always difficult being Harry Potter and it isn’t much easier now that he is an overworked employee of the Ministry of Magic, a husband and father of three school-age children.

While Harry grapples with a past that refuses to stay where it belongs, his youngest son Albus must struggle with the weight of a family legacy he never wanted. As past and present fuse ominously, both father and son learn the uncomfortable truth: sometimes, darkness comes from unexpected places.

Thorne and Tiffany describe working with Rowling0 Comments

With a day to go before the release of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child pre-release tickets, Pottermore has released an editorial describing how director John Tiffany and writer Jack Thorne have collaborated creatively with J. K. Rowling.

John Tiffany:

  Accio Quote:
‘I’d asked both sets of kids in my life, my three nephews and my godchildren, whether I should do this show. They’d all gone through Harry Potter and they all said “We’ll kill you if you don’t”’. So the journey began.

  Accio Quote:
‘Oh, stop it,’ John says and turns to me. ‘We went to Edinburgh to Jo’s house – Jack and I. Then I sort of watched the love affair begin. You know, it’s like taking your best friend to meet your new partner and then realising... Well, it was two writers meeting, you don’t get a look in.’

Jack Thorne:

  Accio Quote:
‘I’d read all the books in my twenties and I’d go to the cinema and watch all the films by myself. I was deeply in love with Potter already, so the chance to do this...’ says Jack, like he still can’t believe J.K. Rowling has given him characters from those books and films to write onto the stage.

  Accio Quote:
‘We started talking about ideas and her generosity in the way she listened to what was inside our heads, and then fed into that with her brilliant mind, was incredible. You were very clear back then, John, that you didn’t want to do something historical.’

“Her” is Hermione Granger, bucktoothed and muggle-born. “I loved her when I read the books – and I’m an old reader, not one of the 13-year-olds who’s grown into their twenties. I didn’t grow up with these three from childhood, but I remember meeting them and going: ‘These guys are great.’ She’s great. She’s great, she’s great, she’s great.”

   Rowling supports Dumezweni casting0 Comments

In a new interview with The Observer, J. K. Rowling once again speaks of her anger at attacks on casting a black Hermione Granger in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

  Accio Quote:
“With my experience of social media, I thought that idiots were going to idiot,” she said in an interview with the Observer. “But what can you say? That’s the way the world is. Noma was chosen because she was the best actress for the job.”

  Accio Quote:
While the vast majority of people responded positively to the casting decision, Rowling said: “I had a bunch of racists telling me that because Hermione ‘turned white’ – that is, lost colour from her face after a shock – that she must be a white woman, which I have a great deal of difficulty with. But I decided not to get too agitated about it and simply state quite firmly that Hermione can be a black woman with my absolute blessing and enthusiasm.”

Rowling: "Harry Potters world is always in my head"0 Comments

In a new interview with The New York Times, J. K. Rowling et al. discuss the theatre show which opens for previews tonight!

  Accio Quote:
Why a play? Was it J. K. Rowling’s idea?

Sonia Friedman It was absolutely Colin’s and my idea. We knew that many other producers had approached her and she had rejected their pitches. But that’s because they were all ideas about musicals or arena spectacles. We went to her with the simple idea of a straight play. We were clear we didn’t want to adapt a novel, and we suggested exploring how Harry, an orphan, would cope as an adult and a parent.

Colin Callender We went up to Edinburgh four years ago and sat in a boardroom and talked about fathers and parenting for a while. We said we felt she had created a fully dimensional world, and there were things about the characters she hadn’t revealed. We didn’t hear anything for a bit, then got the call to say, “Let’s go to the next stage.” She was clear from the beginning that she was not a playwright and wouldn’t write it, and that she would only do it if we found a playwright she approved.

  Accio Quote:
Has it been difficult to work under conditions of intense secrecy? And what about when previews start and people are talking about the play online?

Callender I’m hopeful after seeing how people were about “Star Wars.” They mostly protected the fans.

Tiffany It will be a relief when the text is published, when the play officially opens on July 30, so that it’s not our secret to keep. But if you don’t read it, and you choose not to read reviews, we’ve made it possible to come without prior knowledge.

During his speech he responded to the 'debate' relating to casting a black Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter and the Cursed Child theatre show.

  Accio Quote:
Asked by a student for his view on the controversy surrounding Dumezweni's casting, he replied, "It doesn't matter what colour you are, does it? It doesn't make a difference if you're a black actress or a white actress.

"You'd forget it in five minutes, wouldn't you? When the tabs go up on a play, and the person who's in it starts talking, you soon forget about it. It doesn't matter what colour they are, for God's sake."

Parker on becoming Harry Potter0 Comments

The Stage recently interviewed Jamie Parker (Harry Potter) in relation to taking on such a well-renowned role.

  Accio Quote:
We’re still working during the day and performing at night. But our hours with the creative team are starting to lessen off as we get into a full performance schedule of eight shows a week. The company is feeling really good – Steven [Hoggett, the movement director> has prepped us properly to be in the right physical shape. Working with him, you’ve got to be in shape. And John [Tiffany, the director> has kept up our spirits with his relentless positivity and trust in his company.

  Accio Quote:
It’s been great now to immerse myself in it – I’ve gone through all of them several times now, and I’m going to go through them again. I won’t stop making notes, and every day I am finding out exactly how detailed Jack [Thorne, the playwright> and John’s work on it has been with Jo [JK Rowling>. In any decent play there’s an unspoken script going on underneath the actual script – like Woody Allen’s subtitles, whether they’re serious or funny – and that’s absolutely the case here. The play is perfectly clear to anyone who doesn’t know anything about Harry Potter – it’s just a very good play on that level. But for those who are immersed in it, there are Easter eggs hidden in every scene. There’s a lot that goes unspoken, and that’s fertile ground for being able to talk to each other onstage.

In a new interview with The Times, Anthony Boyle (Scorpius Malfoy) discusses how he immersed himself in the role for the Harry Potter and the Cursed Child theatre show.

  Accio Quote:
He’s the twitchy, ice-blond offspring of nasty Draco Malfoy, Harry Potter’s arch enemy at Hogwarts. And for Anthony Boyle, the actor playing Scorpius Malfoy on stage at the Palace Theatre in London, he represents the biggest break the 22-year-old newcomer could have imagined.

Even Muggles know by now that Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is a monster hit. Tickets are as difficult to find as a dose of Polyjuice Potion; the reception has been rapturous from critics and eager Potterheads, with fans making a pilgrimage to the show from across the globe. “Keep the Secrets”, elated audiences are implored...

"Cursed Child" to arrive on Broadway in 2018!0 Comments

Pottermore has announced that Harry Potter and the Cursed Child producers Sonia Friedman and Colin Callender are in advanced talks for the show to open in New York.

Discussion could see the play open at the Lyric Theatre in the spring of 2018.

  Accio Quote:
When the redesigned Lyric was presented to us as an idea and what the possibilities could be, we re-thought the whole thing and totally fell in love with the notion of a theatre being created especially for the Cursed Child, overseen by designer Christine and our director John Tiffany.

We are still subject to planning, but assuming we get the go ahead, we will have the theatre of our dreams that will be intimate enough for a drama, yet big enough for us to follow in the footsteps of the London production and continue to provide low priced tickets throughout the auditorium.

Tiffany reflects back on Harry Potter work0 Comments

In a new interview with Whats On Stage, John Tiffany looks back at his responsibility to make sure the Harry Potter franchise didn't end up boring.

  Accio Quote:
Did you ever hesitate when taking on something as big as that?

Yes, I suppose that was to do with the responsibility of what I knew this meant to theatre. I knew a huge amount of the audience would be first time theatregoers. I wanted to make sure we could deliver something that wasn't disappointing. I had read those books with my nephews and God-kids and had seen how they connect with the emotional heart of it. I knew that I didn't want to be the person that made Harry Potter boring. I also knew I would have to call on all my collaborators from over the years. I would need everybody standing with me. It took two years full-time work. But if you're going to do it for one project, it might as well be this one.
