Noma Dumezweni discusses lack of imagination and ignorance0 Comments

Noma Dumezweni (Hermione Granger) recently spoke to The London Evening Standard and revealed that she believed those people not embracing the black Hermione Granger lacked imagination and are ignorant.

  Accio Quote:
"It stems from ignorance. They don’t want to be a part of the creative act. To say it’s not as it was intended is so unimaginative."

"I don’t think they understand how theatre works. We’re here to heal you, make you smile and whisk you away."

   Dumezweni on playing Hermione0 Comments

In a new interview with The Guardian, Dumezweni opens up a little about playing Hermione Granger in the upcoming Cursed Child theatre performance.

  Accio Quote:
Harry Potter chat is officially on lockdown until rehearsals get going in April but Dumezweni declares: “The point is that I, Noma Dumezweni, am busting with pleasure that I’m going to be playing her.”

“Her” is Hermione Granger, bucktoothed and muggle-born. “I loved her when I read the books – and I’m an old reader, not one of the 13-year-olds who’s grown into their twenties. I didn’t grow up with these three from childhood, but I remember meeting them and going: ‘These guys are great.’ She’s great. She’s great, she’s great, she’s great.”

   Rowling supports Dumezweni casting0 Comments

In a new interview with The Observer, J. K. Rowling once again speaks of her anger at attacks on casting a black Hermione Granger in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

  Accio Quote:
“With my experience of social media, I thought that idiots were going to idiot,” she said in an interview with the Observer. “But what can you say? That’s the way the world is. Noma was chosen because she was the best actress for the job.”

  Accio Quote:
While the vast majority of people responded positively to the casting decision, Rowling said: “I had a bunch of racists telling me that because Hermione ‘turned white’ – that is, lost colour from her face after a shock – that she must be a white woman, which I have a great deal of difficulty with. But I decided not to get too agitated about it and simply state quite firmly that Hermione can be a black woman with my absolute blessing and enthusiasm.”

Gambon responds to "Cursed Child" casting0 Comments

The Radio Times is reporting that Sir Michael Gambon recently spoke at the Oxford Students’ Union.

During his speech he responded to the 'debate' relating to casting a black Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter and the Cursed Child theatre show.

  Accio Quote:
Asked by a student for his view on the controversy surrounding Dumezweni's casting, he replied, "It doesn't matter what colour you are, does it? It doesn't make a difference if you're a black actress or a white actress.

"You'd forget it in five minutes, wouldn't you? When the tabs go up on a play, and the person who's in it starts talking, you soon forget about it. It doesn't matter what colour they are, for God's sake."

   Dumezweni: "Hermione is fascinating"0 Comments

In a new interview with The Times, Noma Dumezweni spoke about her role as Hermione and how she finds the character fascinating.

  Accio Quote:
I don’t know what traits they saw in me, but reading what Jack and John had written, it’s that bossy girl at school who’s trying to make things right in the world. Hermione is fascinating because every girl, every walk of life, every race, gets it – how do we go into the world? I want to go into the world the way she does. Am I brave enough to go through what she does?

Dumezweni to feature in "Black Earth Rising"0 Comments

Noma Dumezweni is set to star in a new eight-part drama called Black Earth Rising.

The series will be set against the backdrop of the International Criminal Court in The Hague.

  Accio Quote:
The latter’s executives refused to divulge the nature of Ms Dumezweni’s role in Black Earth Rising except to describe it as ‘notable’ and ‘significant’, though later they upgraded that appraisal to ‘a major pivotal role . . . and we’re thrilled that she’s in it’.
