Hey Everyone,

I am currently in University working on my Bachalor of Arts and I'm majoring in Religious Studies. I got into a class intitled Religion aand Popular Culture. The Course is based on Harry Potter and other Popular flims, books and TV shows.

We had, for our main project, to build a web site based on Religion and whatever we chose... I did Harry Potter! Big Surprise... So I basically compared Harry to Jesus and Dumbledore to God...

I'll like some honest feedback, so asking you guys as avid HP fans to check it out :

Thanks,

I copied and pasted the link but the web told me there were no search results. Maybe you should drag and drop the address into the post and we can hotlink right to it! I would love to see what you have worked so hard on!

Sounds like an interesting project. TLM, a member of this site is a Religion Teacher who also runs a Harry Potter discussion group at her school, comparing the Bible to Potterverse. They actually read passages from "the second book of Rowling" (admit it, you gotta love it!). I know presently she is tied up with committments, (as we speak singing her little heart out at an Irish Festival, she's also lead singer in a band), but I am going to pass this on to her....

But all in all, good luck with your project!!! biggrin.gif

This needs to go in the Trophy Cabinet since you are advertising a site. Or are you asking us to bring the discussion to this board? Hmm...I think that would be against the rules since it's about religion.

I can't say I've ever noticed a parallel between Harry Potter and the stories in the Bible. I think it just shares the same elements of grand story telling which seem to crop up in all the great works of fantasy:
Good Vs Evil, Betrayal, Redemption, Self-Sacrifice, Prophecy.

I wouldn't necessarily view the Phoenix as a Christian element - I think JK Rowling considered it in its original mythological context as she did many other creatures - such as the Hipogriff. The Phoenix was a symbol of resurrection long before Christianity adopted it to represent Jesus during the Middle Ages.

If memory serves the Griffin has never been used to symbolise anything in the Christian Tradition. And, although Harry's house takes the Griffin as its namesake; via Godric of course; the Gryffindor crest displays a Lion and not a Griffin.
