*snickers* And now we come back to the subject of Mr. David Thewlis... Man, I wish I had the old thread around here, just to laugh at all of the nay-sayers. "He doesn't look like Lupin!" / "I've never seen him act!" / "THAT MOUSTACHE!" / "Blah-de-blah-blah-blah..."

Admit it. Callie and I were right. He was AMAZING.
*pets Davie* Good job, dearling. Just swell. ^__^

I'm afraid I was one of those who couldn't quite see past the moustache at first.....

he was however *really* good - just the right balance of affectionate and funny and sad.
There were some excellent performances in the film, but his was one of those that really held the movie together.

I loved how he played Lupin. I loved the mix of strength and venerability (sp?) he showed. The scene where he was talking to Harry on the bridge is on of my favorite scene's in the film. It really shows what the film is all about and the acting is fantastic.

I agree with Tess - Thewlis did an EXCELLENT portrayal of Lupin. Although I would've expected a bit more "cheeriness" from him with other scenes from the book, I guess they didn't have enough time to place those nice additions in the movie.

Lupin isn't cheerful, Liliana. He's a sad man, a tormented soul. Even when he's happy, he's not really happy. Not a carefree man, Lupin. *huggles him*
Ahem. But anyway...
Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee I wish the old thread was still here! I never got a chance to go in there and say "HA! Imbociles, all of you!" Hehehehe So many people whined and complained about Davie and come on, he was PERFECT. Forget the moustache! Who cares? Sirius was covered in tattoos, but I'm not about to claim Gary Oldman didn't do a wonderful job!
*dances* He was so good. And no one held higher expectations of Lupin's portrayl than me, I can be certain of that. (Well, perhaps they were equaled by Tess's

) But Davie was wonderful, fabulous, all things terrific. Scars never looked so good. Mmm.

One of my other passions besides Harry Potter, are werewolves. I thought Lupin's characteristics and everything I pictured in the book were well put to screen with David. He did an absolutely amazing job. There are some also saying that the werewolf was too weak and not strong and such. But I put it to you like this, think of the description of Lupin in the book. Rundown, ragged looking (btw loved the scars always on Lupin's face)... I think Cauron took that and transformed him. I mean Lupin is a werewolf, not the Incredible Hulk here... so if he is ragged and rundown in human form, same would hone true for werewolf form. I thought David performed amazingly and I really hope he returns to take on Lupin again in OotP.

Yes, I agree.

While I was one of those people who hoped Ewan McGregor would play Lupin, I have to say that David did a good job, though he wasn't quite as effeminate as I pictured Lupin in the book. (But that's just because I was in love with him. ^^) Perhaps Lupin isn't supposed to be effeminate, being a werewolf and all. But anyways, I really liked him.

Callie dear, your devotion to Remus Lupin never ceases to amaze me. Your reply made me want to both laugh [because you're so da.mn serious about it all the time] and cry [because you're absolutely correct]... I admire that you've not decided to turn Remus into a hot, dripping-with-sweat, sex-NO WAY, as so many other [and OBVIOUSLY lesser] fangirls have done... You humanize him. That rocks. Sage, you finally expressed my feelings about Lupin--effeminate! I just could not come up with a word that described how a viewed him, but that's it! Just a tad, mind you. As to the werewolf thing, well, according to the book, a werewolf is only slightly different from a real wolf, that would suggest hair. Which is why I hate that thing they have in the movie. I agree he should be thin and rough around the edges, but definitely wolf-size and covered with fur. (Give that poor boy some eggs to improve his coat!)

I meant cheerful as in not letting get the worst of his life get to him. There are lots of examples in the books...
I first thought Lupin wouldn't look good with a mustache, but I really liked it on Thewlis. It suited him, and drew his "gentlemanly" character out.

I didn't think of him like that, there is no where in the books description to build that impression, so it would be funny how people would see him like that. I see him as a lonely man who needs a big hug

I noticed your avatar has a curse word in it as well. Please use better judgment when selecting sigs and avatars. You should not have to be told not to put a big bold curse word in your signature. The impression I got from the book was that Lupin was very kind and gentle, and David Thewlis just didn't seem to convey that. Was it just me, or did he seem a bit...girly in the shrieking shack scene? Like when he backs away from Snape? I don't think I like the way he's holding his hands or something weird that that. Maybe it's just me...
Hedwig1369
Jun 14 2004, 04:38 PM
Em16 I can see how that seemed weird, and maybe if the done more to cover things like the book did it would make better sense. The reason why I think Lupin backs away from Snape is because of their past together. Snape knows what Lupin is and knows that Snape hasn't let the past go. That is of course how I precieved it, and it my opinion.

OMG! Thewlis is SOOOOO wrong for this part!!!! He's a really good actor and everything but he's NOT Lupin! Absolutely everyone I've talked to about it totally agrees and doesn't think he fits in the role as Lupin.. :S And besides casting the wrong person as Lupin, they totally messed the werewolf up..It didn't even resemble a wolf.. I know a wolf and a werewolf isn't the same thing, but I've seen plenty of moveis with werewolfes in them and without seeing none I would still be able to say how wrong that one looked.. It really just looked ridiculous.. but this is a David Thewlis discussion forum, so enough of the werewolf.. I just really didn't like Thewlis as Lupin.. He's a good actor, but.. he just wasn't Lupin..

*glances around warily* Time for David Thewlis thread 101 --
1] This thread isn't about Ewan McGregor. *blink*
2] This thread isn't even really about how Cuaron decided to portray Lupin, especially in his lycanthrope form. If you wish to talk about that, try heading over to the "Prisoner of Azkaban -- Movie" forum.
3] If you are not a fan of Mr. Thewlis', kindly move aside. You're only irritating the loyal denizens of this thread [namely myself] by bashing his performance. As the Snitch guidelines state, these threads in the "Casting Call" forum are more "appreciation" threads than places to rant about a certain actor's performance in the films. [Example -- I'm not the biggest Rupert Grint fan on earth, thus I'd try to avoid any threads dedicated to him. ^_~]
Can we all live with this? Thanks... Continue.

Yea you go Tess! I think he did great and anyone who thinks otherwise can bite me. His mannerisms were perfect, the entire time I read the book I had this picture of a tall man who seemed very fragile yet very strong, the moustache in my opinion added to his werewolf character. It made him seem "hairy-er" that really worked.
As for the fact that he isn't portrayed as a sexy guy, I never got the idea that he was sexy in the books. Sirius is portrayed that way but Lupin was always portrayed as the kind of person that would blend into the background, you know someone you wouldn't really notice. Sirius and James were the ones that got noticed, Lupin and Peter always seemed more of the "normal" kids. They had no real extraordinary talents about them, except for the fact that Lupin is very smart and very well-mannered, remember he was made prefect! But I always saw him as a very smart and sophisticated man who was a little rough and beat up looking. Which was shown excellently in the movie (his scars were fabulous, I could almost imagine young Lupin in the shrieking shack as a werewolf biting himself and scratching himself, remember he did that in his early days.) I really think that he was perfect for the role, I have never seen him in anything else but I just loved him. Couldn't have been portrayed better.
Oh and I never saw Ewan McGregor in this role because he simply is too young and too, sexy. As I said earlier, Lupin was average looking, but he was very intelligent, a little like Hermione, so I never saw a heartthrob playing him. Just wouldn't have worked.

Everyones view on them is different. Look at Michael Jacksons thriller, where he looks more like Hermione after taking polyjuice potion, compared to Underworld.
Have you been watching too much Van Helsing?

I really liked the way they made Lupins werewolf a bit similar to him. So he hadn't completely changed, he was still human underneath. If that makes sense.

Awww, I thought he was excellent. To me, he made the screen Lupin exactly the quiet, intelligent, well mannered and good natured man he is in the books (with that hint of "tortured soul" that I love in a character). At first I didn't think he looked the part...but I agree that the moustache really did add to his "gentlemanly" appeal. It was such a warm performance...aww, it made me want to hug him!

Bahah! That part makes me laugh!! I love it! It's just like he's thinking..."Ooookay, maybe I won't go there!" My favourite bit in the Shrieking Shack, after the part where Sirius comes out from behind the door
I thought it was an great performance, making his character stand out so much and making his performance as powerful as a lot of the other characters who have more "in your face" characters...if that makes sense!
As for the werewolf (sorry if this is off topic)...It wasn't the lack of hair that made me not so fond of it. It just seemed completely disproportionate! No major complaints about it though, like you guys said, the shabby werewolf reflects Lupin's shabby clothes and whatnot. Which is what the book said.

I loved David as Lupin

. He is great. I have one little snag though. Have no fear I adore Alan Rickman as Snape and no-one could play him as good as he does, BUT, as he is not in his 'youth' anymore it means that any younger actors that might have been chosen to play Sirius, James, Peter or Lupin will be overlooked. This is because they will have to find someone to match Rickman's age as the Maurauders were in the same year at school as Snape.
Alan rules as Snape and David rules as Lupin
