I'm a little confused as to the deatils of the Gringotts break-in in PS. Was Voldemort possessing Quirrel when the break-in happened? Does JK ever go into more details than just mentioning it? If someone could fill me in it would be greatly appreciated.

Ooh, good question. Well, I'm terrible at keeping up on JKR's interviews, so I dunno what she has said on this topic.
I believe Voldy was NOT posessing Quirrell yet because Quirrell didn't have the turban on when Harry met him in the Leaky Cauldron, only when he showed up at Hogwarts. Also, I -think- (but am too lazy to get PS from the other room) that Quirrell said that after his failure to retreive the stone Voldy felt the need to keep a closer eye on him and so began to share his body. But Voldy clearly was influencing Quirrell, if not outright posessing him, during the Gringott's break-in. -------------------- "Do we walk in legends or on the green earth in the daylight?" Now that you mention it, I do remember Quirrel saying he failed to retrieve the stone.

Greasy Git has it right, Quirrell wasn't possesed until after his failed attempt at breaking into Gringgotts. When he started wearing the turban (around Christmas) was when he became possessed. Remember the Twins would throw things at it (the turban) and students started making comments about the smell?
Quirrell brought LV back from his Summer travels, and I pretty sure in his weakened state LV was able to use mind control to an extent; then possession when Quirrell failed. -------------------- IKWT! I agree with Geasy Git and Lalaluna - Quirrel wasn't posessed when he broke in to Gringotts, though I do imagine he had some help from LV to actually break in. Maybe temporary posession, like in OotP? Harry certainly didn't have a face on the back of his head, yet LV was in his mind
Quirrel was only working on LV's orders at that time, and was probably being controlled a little - although I do think Quirrel wanted to steal the stone and wasn't forced into it with mind-control. LV probably managed to lure him with lies, similar to how LV tried to win Harry over by telling him he could bring back Harry's parents or something. Obviously Harry was strong enough to resist, but Quirrel was a little twerp wanting power and control. -------------------- Like an angel with two broken wings, reach to the sky again. No, actually Quirrel was already wearing his turban on the September, 1 when Harry was sorted. And during the break-in to Gringotts he surely wasn't possessed yet as he shook Harry's hand and wasn't burnt -------------------- Somewhere over the rainbow Way up high And the dreams that you dreamed of Once in a lullaby Somewhere over the rainbow Blue birds fly And the dreams that you dreamed of Dreams really do come true |
