Hi guys,

I was just wondering what sort of shoes witches and wizards wear? Normal Muggle shoes? First years are not requiered to buy special shoes and we have never heard of a shoe shop in Diagon Alley. So do the wizarding folk simply wear Muggle shoes?

And are there special shoes you wear for Quidditch? I guess not, seeing as you fly on broomsticks and don't need special shoes but maybe there are Quidditch shoes that don't weigh as much as normal shoes because that would permit the player to fly faster.

Anyway, what do you think?

Great question. I've got a feeling that most of the Hogwarts students at least, wear Muggle shoes. Someone should ask JKR that.

In one book (PS/SS I think) Dumbledore was drescribed as wearing some kind of boots.

I've been thinking about wizard clothes vs muggle clothes, & I think that except for long robes that wizards wear, the clothes are probably about the same. I mean, wouldn't everybody wear trousers, shirts, and socks of some sort...how much different can they be?

That is something I haven't though about before. mmmm

Does anyone recall what Dan etc wore in the films? I keep getting images of trainers but that could just be my imagination.

I remember some vague description in OoTP about a witch or wizard going to the wizarding hosptial because the shoes were biting their feet - but that may have been due to a curse by a family member.

I think muggle borns would certainly be attending Hogwarts with muggle shoes as they won't have known any better if there are different kinds of magical ones.

Erm...I think DD is described as wearing boots, isn't he? That's what I always picture the adults wearing, anyway.

DD's boots are described as high-heeled buckled boots in PS and both Harry and Ron are wearing trainers at some point.

Oooooh *claps hands excitedly* Gooood thinking, Sunny! wink.gif

I think Hollycat is right though, Ron & Harry do wear trainers at some point but what does Hermione wear? Muggle shoes, wizarding boots like Dumbledore? I guess Muggle shoes since her best friends do the same ... I guess all young wizards and witches wear trainers or other Muggle shoes. But wouldn't you think someone like Draco would never ever slip into trainers? Well maybe there are wizarding boots to be bought at Twilfit & Tattings?

Great topic!

Thanks for your replies,

now that you guys mention it ... I do remember Harry & Ron wearing trainers at some point (wasn't it in HBP where Draco caught a glimpse of Harry's trainers when he jumped onto the luggage rack?).

I would have said that adults wear something like the boots DD wears, something like the ones in the illustration of him on the back of PS. I can't really see the kids wearing them though. I'm sure it says in one of the later books, that you could see harry's trainers under the cloak? On the train, when he sneaked into Malfoys compartment. I can't really remember - I've been away from HP for a while. unsure.gif

Edit: Yeah, Sunny already said that. ^^ Oops.

THAT is exactly what I thought. Underneath their robes, they must be wearing general muggle everyday wear. Not just the robes on their own...although it's interesting to imagine the characters without them...

When Harry sees his dad flip Snape upside down in the air (in the pensieve), Sevi's undies are showing. An older male wizard comments earlier in a book about wearing robes to get a bit of a breeeze around his privates. I've always assumed they didn't wear anything under robes except underwear. It wasn't until the movies that it ever occurred to me they dresssed otherwise. I assume you can buy a 'shoe' at Madam Malkim's and her similar competitors. I would highly doubt Draco wears anything remotely muggle, like trainers. He probably wears some type of classy leather dressy wizard shoe. (the magical equivalent of a loafer with sweet little tassles on them- at least he does in my mind....hehehe)

I don't think wizards are wearing something like muggle clothes under the robes because i the 4th book Mr. Weasly was asking Harry whether he looks like a Muggle in some strange clothes. Remember the clothes of the other wizarts on the finals of quddich espesialy the ones worn by the minestry servant - a poncho and a kilt(i'm not sure i spell it corectly).

As for the shoes i remember it was mantioned in the same book thet Bill was wearing clothes as for a rock concert exept that his shoes were made of dragon leather.

And for me if there is no shoe store on Diagon Alley someone MUST go there and help these people to discover the joy of buyng loads of new disainer shoes. I mean WHAT ARE THESE WEMEN DOING WHEN THEY ARE IN DEPRESSION OR HAD A RAW WITH THEIR BOYFRIEN/HUSBAND AND WANT TO GIVE IT BACK TO THEM OR JUST RELAX!!!!!!

Good point!...Bill wore boots, and so did Dumbledore. Harry had trainers, but he was raised by Muggles. Though, I -do- think Ron also wore trainers, I can't remember. But wizard familes don't have much to do with the Muggle world, would they really throw on the poncho and kilt or some other ridiculous getup of Muggle clothes to go to a Muggle mall just for shoes?? There probably is a shoe store someone in Diagon Alley...that's my bet...though it wasn't mentioned specifically.

Trainers = sneakers unless I'm much mistaken. Basketball/running shoes etc.
