well, I think the best thing to do is to look at drawings you like and see what they've made different than you, for instance, if you don't like how you draw hands, look how other people whose drawing style you like have done, and imitate. Simply be inspired by others, try different things. And practise, practise, practise! And draw because it's fun, not for any other reason!

Yup I do ^^ hardly ever draw Potter stuff though so I don't think I've got anything here on TS. Anyway I've learnt a lot through looking at my friends' drawings (I have some friends who really are like artists) and so on, so for me it works... ^^

you? I suppose you like manga too if you're an anime fan?

I've learned that practice actually does lead to perfection - or pretty close to it.
Thankfully I was blessed with the skill of drawing so I've never had to sit through those tedious art/drawing classes.
Isolate a characteristic and concentrate it.
For example, - since hands were mentioned earlier & I've actually done this - if you want to steadily increase your ability to draw hands, just draw hands - over and over again. Not just the normal anatomical-position hands, but hands in different positions, maybe even holding different objects, doing different things. I have/had (can't find it) a notebook filled with just drawings of hands.
Even now, when I'm bored, I'll just randomly start drawing eyes trying to see how many different kinds of eyes I can think up on spot.
With drawing, the only way to get better is to practice. However, for different drawing styles I suggest different practicing techniques.
For anime/cartoon style, look at different styles then create a style of your own. The good think about anime/cartoon drawings is that things don't have to be perfectly proportionate.
For realistic drawings, I would suggest the technique I mentioned about of isolation and concentration. If you try to practice drawing realistically, it's too much to draw a whole drawing every time. With realism, things have to be perfect -or close to it, so it looks similarly or exactly like your subject. In order to be "perfect" if you practice one aspect at a time, eventually these things become second nature and you'll be able to draw an entire portrait/drawing without too much problems.
Also, with realistic drawings, start with young adults/adults. Babies and even toddlers are still disproportionate and half the time while you're in the middle of your drawing you'll feel like the placement and sizes are wrong because of the odd ratios.
My drawings can be found on TS and at my website.
Hope this helps.
